STERN RESIDENCE
A river really runs through this home! Begin Tour >>
When you enter the Stern residence, you are greeted by vivid colors, contrasting styles and rich textures that ebb and flow together to mimic the gracious river views reflected throughout the home. "Classic with a modern twist streamed in color" is how resident and creative interior designer Tracy Stern describes her style.
Hermes-box orange was paired with a gold leaf square design ceiling make the foyer a perfect backdrop for four contemporary nude drawings done by Mrs. Stern. The well-appointed French accent pieces provide a warm contrast. Of note, are the antique Venetian mirror and the Louis XVI companion chairs with a Madam Pompadour screen-print formerly showcased in The Royal Tea Room (a popular tea spot in southern Florida, once owned by Mrs. Stern). Just off the foyer is a special treat wrapped in rich toile - a lovely guest nook. The owner professes that this "Parisian Boutique-hotel" room is her favorite. It may be yours too!
The mirrored walls of the living room gently reflect the East River swimming through the home. Rich luxurious fabrics and textures invite guests to recline. The gilt Louis XVI settee graciously contrasts with the leather upholstered coffee table and lush chenille damask sofa with brushed fringe trim. These elements blend together to give the room an inviting and comfortable feel. Combinations of geometric Lulu DK fabrics and traditional Ralph Lauren pieces draw us into the dining room where symmetrical topiaries give this long room a landscaped impression, which is reinforced with beautiful Hudson River landscapes painted by a local New York artist. Other interesting elements include the crystal and pearl drop chandelier, designed by Mrs. Stern, and of course, her wonderful antique tea collection, especially the Russian Samovar.
Palm Beach is the inspiration for the pink and green "fun and functional" kitchen. The awning inspired valance brings the terrace inside where the family enjoys inside/outside dining.
Perfect for the dainty little princess of the home, her room is drenched from floor to ceiling in Stark pink and white toile. The miniature French furnishings and pink and white beaded chandelier provide the perfect setting for a tea party. Big brother is next-door. His room conjures memories of a Hunt Club. Filled with Ralph Lauren plaids, bamboo trimmed furnishings, dark woods, antique lighting fixtures and equestrian accents create an atmosphere conducive to horsing around.
Formerly a one-bedroom apartment, the luxurious master suite has plenty of space. Gold accents, chocolate walls and rich mahogany Fixtures blend beautifully with the rich Chanel inspired quilted fabrics in the inviting dining alcove. The whimsical hot air balloon inspired chandelier, dripping with pearls and crystals, is a favorite piece - tied to wonderful personal memories. The master bathroom and dressing room mimic the spaciousness of the suite. Marble textures and hand-painted appointments graciously lead into the bathing area that is framed by classic columns and draped in gold fortuny.
Every room is as functional as it is fun! Look for more interesting facts about this spectacular New York home on HGTV in May.
